Free-agent shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera has agreed to terms with the Tampa Bay Rays on a one-year, $7.5 million contract, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.
One of the top remaining position players on the free-agent market, Cabrera is coming off two straight subpar seasons at the plate after being named an All-Star at shortstop in both 2011 and 2012.
This past season, Cabrera hit .241/.307/.387 with 14 home runs and 49 extra-base hits in 146 games for the Indians and Nationals. The 29-year-old spent the first seven years of his career in Cleveland before a midsummer trade landed him in Washington to end the 2014 campaign.
Just three years ago, Cabrera was viewed as one of baseball's better hitting shortstops, but he followed a disastrous 2013 season with even worse production last year. His home run totals have dipped from a career-high of 25 in 2011 to 14 the past two seasons, and judging by his overall decline with the bat, Cabrera's best days look to be behind him.
Questions about Cabrera's defense at shortstop have also grown louder by the year, and given how his offensive production has decreased, the Venezuelan native might not be an everyday option any longer.
Still, he does bring the ability to play multiple positions in the infield, and there's always a chance he regains some of his lost value on offense.
In his final season of salary arbitration, Cabrera earned $10 million in 2014.
