Four schools will now be jockeying to receive visits from the star cover corner before he decides.
SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- A little more than a week after delaying a planned Christmas commitment, Gilmer (Texas) cornerback Kris Boyd released his top five while in San Antonio for the 2015 US Army All-American Bowl:

Boyd told SB Nation Recruiting during the week that he planned on having a surprise in his top five and with schools like Baylor, Florida State, Texas, and Texas A&M seemingly locked into spots, the surprise school ended up being TCU.
A consensus four-star prospect ranked as the No. 7 cornerback nationally by 247Sports, Boyd and his younger brother, Demarco, were spotted just before Christmas throwing the "hook 'em Horns" hand sign after Gilmer won a state championship:

Coming as it did shortly after the commitment of five-star linebacker Malik Jefferson to Texas and with Boyd having announced a planned decision on Christmas day, significant momentum seemed to be pointing to the Longhorns.
However, Boyd downplayed any meaning behind the gestures on Tuesday.
"It was nothing big," he said. "This game I'm probably going to throw up Florida State or Baylor or TCU or Roll Tide. It could be pretty much anything."
For fans of the other schools still under consideration, one of the important questions has been the impetus behind Boyd pushing back that decision.
"I just felt like it was the time, but then again maybe it wasn't because people are enjoying their family on the holidays," said Boyd.
Since the athletic cover corner who has showed well during the week of practice has only used one of his official visits so far -- on a trip to see the Seminoles in late November -- he still has four official visits left. However, the month-long dead period that ends on the 14th means that it's unlikely more than three schools will receive visits before he makes his decision with only three visit weekends remaining before National Signing Day on February 4.
If there are three visits that happen, the school that doesn't receive one could well end up on the outside looking in when Boyd makes his eventual decision.
Like many top prospects, Boyd isn't worried about the depth charts at the schools that he's considering because he believes, quite rightly, that he can make an early impact wherever he goes regardless of the depth chart. It's the type of confidence necessary for a defensive back who needs a short memory out on the field.
Other than comfort level at the program he picks, Boyd's younger brother will factor into his decision. Demarco Boyd is a 5'11, 215-pound linebacker in the 2016 class.
"Anywhere I go, I'm going to talk with him and make sure that he's okay with it," said the elder Boyd.
The brothers plan on playing together in college, which limits their options somewhat since Demarco only has two reported offers at this time -- Texas and Florida State, though there has been talk that Baylor has offered as well.
Sp will the desire to play together eliminate schools that haven't offered like Texas A&M and TCU if those schools haven't offered the younger Boyd in the next several weeks?
The 6'0, 185-pound cornerback doesn't have a firm date for his decision, but may decide before National Signing Day. Texas is the current leader in his 247Sports Crystal Ball with 61% of the predictions after trending when he and his brother were throwing up the "hook 'em Horns" hand sign after the state championship game. Texas A&M trails Texas at 24%, while Florida State (12%) and Baylor (3%) also have predictions.
