United and the Reds, two old foes, meet at Old Trafford to resume their storied rivalry.
When Manchester United faces Liverpool, all the great sports clichés pertaining to rivalries are brought out to describe the match. Throw out the record book, form doesn't matter, you've likely heard them all before and there's a grain of truth to all of them. These two fanbases don't like one another and the importance of winning this game goes well beyond its impact in the table.
United were horrible at the start of the campaign but slowly but surely Louis van Gaal has turned things around as his team has become comfortable with his tactics. United have won six straight league matches to move up to third place in the EPL and can actually see Chelsea's taillights in the distance.
Liverpool crashed out of the Champions League during the midweek with a mediocre display against Basel, leaving Brendan Rodgers with the league and the likely unwanted consolation prize of the Europa League. The Reds aren't out of the race for a European spot but they need to start putting together some wins to be taken seriously. Defeating their rivals would be a wonderful way to give the side a boost and start the busy holiday season.
