NHL Thursday: Senators try to win one for Alfie

Ottawa will have to defeat the upstart Islanders if they want to finish Daniel Alfredsson's retirement off right. Elsewhere the Canucks battle the Penguins in a matchup between two of the league's best teams.

When the season began, nobody expected the Vancouver Canucks to be back among the NHL's elite. While they may not have fully earned back that status yet, they will get a chance to prove their worth against a consistent NHL powerhouse.

The Canucks visit the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET in a battle between two of the league's top teams. Both clubs own identical records and are challenging competitors for the top spots in their respective conferences. The only difference is that most expected the Penguins to be where they are. Vancouver has surprised fans that thought they weren't quite ready yet. We'll see just how ready they are on Thursday.

Elsewhere, the St. Louis Blues enter Nashville to challenge the upstart Predators for the Central Division lead at 8 p.m. ET. Preseason projections had the Blues and Chicago Blackhawks running away with the Central, but instead its the Predators who have claimed the crown through the first few months. With a win on Thursday, the Blues could regain the division lead.
