Tony Stewart undergoes 4th surgery on right leg

The three-time NASCAR champion is out of the hospital after minor surgery on his right leg.

Tony Stewart underwent a routine surgery on his right leg Monday. He injured the leg in a 2013 Sprint car crash. He was released from the hospital Wednesday and is flying to Las Vegas for the NASCAR Sprint Cup awards ceremony.

This is the fourth operation Stewart has undergone since breaking two bones in his right leg in an Aug. 5, 2013 Sprint car crash at an Iowa dirt track. Stewart had two surgeries on the injured leg in the weeks immediately following the incident and a third to close a wound on his shin. During his recovery, he missed the final 15 races of the Sprint Cup season.

Prior to the start of the 2014 season, Stewart estimated he was "65 percent" healthy and said it would be some time before he was completely recovered. The three-time NASCAR champion struggled during the year to be competitive, failing to win a race for the first time in his 15-year career and missing the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Stewart is in Las Vegas honoring Stewart-Haas Racing teammate Kevin Harvick, who won the Cup championship. In his first season driving for the organization co-owned by Stewart, Harvick scored five victories to give SHR its second title in four years.
