Get ready for the swaggiest recruiting process in the history of recruiting.
Los Angeles Lakers shooting guard Nick Young, also known by the nickname "Swaggy P," has been bringing his unique style and flair to the basketball court for years. This offseason, Young hopes to use that swagger off the court to recruit star players to the Lakers, according to Mark Medina of the L.A. Daily News.
Yes, you read that correctly: Swaggy P wants to be the Lakers' free-agent pitchman. And he's apparently already gotten started.
"I told Goran Dragic on the court, ‘You might be my teammate next year.’" Young told the Los Angeles Daily News on Monday night. "I’ll talk to Marc (Gasol.) Me and him are cool. Kevin Love, I’ll talk to him."
Dragic, Gasol and Love are three of the top names who could potentially hit the open market in the summer when the Lakers will be looking to reload. The team still has Kobe Bryant and his $25 million contract on the books for next season, but there's enough cap space available for the team to make a run at a big name.
Young, who signed a four-year extension with the Lakers last offseason, is trying to get involved in that effort. The 29-year-old is confident he can help get the team out of its current funk. "This offseason is going to be big for us. It’s going to work out," he told Medina.
Then again, with Kobe around, it'll be difficult for Young to assert himself as a major figure in the team's recruiting efforts. There's little doubt who has more authority in L.A. these days given Kobe's unique standing with the team, and the future Hall of Famer has already openly admitted to recruiting point guard Rajon Rondo. It's likely that Kobe will try to speak with other prospective free agents, as well, and it's unclear how Young might fit into those efforts.
With that said, Young has emerged as one of the Lakers' most prominent players, and he seems well liked throughout the league. If he wants to go play laser tag with Marc Gasol and try to convince him on the benefits of Hollywood, it's doubtful anyone would stop him.
