The Patriots won all 10 games in which they scored first this season.
In the last four years, the team that scored first in the Super Bowl went on to win and that's a trend that has been of note for much of Super Bowl history. Teams that score first are 32-16 in the Super Bowl and there will be plenty of spotlight on which team manages to get on the scoreboard first in Super Bowl XLIX.
Las Vegas oddsmakers currently have the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots deadlocked at -115 each for who will score the first points.
For the Patriots, scoring first seems to have more of an impact than simply getting off to a good start. New England managed to score first 10 times this season and won each game. Only the Cincinnati Bengals managed to also stay undefeated this season when scoring first, although they only did so in six games. In the eight games where the opposing teams managed to get on the scoreboard first, the Patriots finished with a 4-4 record.
Games aren't as dependent upon the first score for the Seahawks, though. Including the playoffs, the Seahawks are 8-2 when scoring first and 6-2 when scoring second.
The last team to win the Super Bowl after falling behind early was the New Orleans Saints, who allowed the Indianapolis Colts to get out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter of Super Bowl XLIV.
