The NIT concluded its first round Wednesday with just 16 teams remaining.
The NIT first round concluded on Wednesday night with more exciting postseason basketball. The round of 16 is now set and the next round of games will take place March 20-23.
Nearly all of the teams snubbed from the NCAA Tournament moved on, while defending national champion UConn goes home disappointed with a first-round loss. Temple, Old Dominion and Richmond were the No. 1 seeds to advance. No. 1 Colorado State wasn't as fortunate as they lost by 10, 86-76, to South Dakota State.
Here are Wednesday's complete results.
No. 1 Temple 73, No. 8 Bucknell 67
There was a lot of shooting, but not many baskets. Temple made just 39 percent of its field goals, while Bucknell shot 33.8 percent from the field. The Owls pulled off the win thanks to a vastly better free-throw percentage (21-of-26) than the Bison (10-of-18). Will Cummings was a one-man wrecking crew for Temple, scoring 30 points on 9-of-14 shooting. Temple will play No. 5 seed George Washington next.
No. 5 Arizona State 68, No. 4 Connecticut 61
UConn's disappointing season finally comes to a close, with the defending champions being dumped out in the first round of the NIT. Four Sun Devils scored in double digits, with Shaquielle McKissic dropping 22 points on the Huskies. Rodney Purvis led UConn with 19 points on 8-of-18 shooting. ASU gets a date with Richmond on Saturday.
No. 1 Old Dominion 65, No. 8 Charleston Southern 56
The Monarchs didn't do much to claim they got robbed from an NCAA Tournament bid, but they held CSU to a 34 percent field goal percentage despite shooting just 38.2 percent themselves. Jonathan Arledge led ODU with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Trey Freeman completed a triple-double (14 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists). Saah Nimley scored 27 points to lead CSU, but it wasn't nearly enough. ODU moves on to face Illinois State.
No. 1 Richmond 84, No. 8 St. Francis-Brooklyn 74
Richmond took an 11-point lead at halftime and never really let it slip away despite late efforts by the Terriers. The Spiders six double-digit scorers, with three of them coming off the bench. Terry Allen led the way with 21 points and 11 rebounds on 7-of-12 shooting. Richmond shot 53.8 percent from the field, compared to 44.6 percent for St. Francis-Brooklyn. The Spiders play Arizona State in the round of 16.
No. 4 Illinois State 69, No. 5 Green Bay 56
Points were a premium here, with Illinois State shooting just 35.8 percent while Green Bay shot 37.7 percent. Where the Redbirds won was in the free-throw department -- Illinois State made 27-of-33 from the charity stripe, while the Phoenix made just 6-of-13. Keifer Sykes scored 14 points on 5-of-16 shooting to lead Green Bay, but his final college game ultimately ended on a whimper. Paris Lee led the Redbirds with 18 points and six assists. Illinois State gets Old Dominion next.
No. 5 Vanderbilt 75, No. 4 St. Mary's 64
The Commodores held an eight-point lead at halftime and were never really threatened by the Gaels. Vanderbilt lives to play another game after being an afterthought in the NCAA Tournament selection process. Damian Jones was the man of the hour for Vanderbilt, scoring 21 points on 10-of-14 shooting and grabbing seven rebounds to lead the team in both categories. Garrett Jackson led St. Mary's with 23 points and Brad Waldow had a double-double (12 points, 13 rebounds), but it wasn't enough to get the win. Vanderbilt will play South Dakota State.
No. 1 Colorado State vs. No. 8 South Dakota State
After being one of the top snubs from the NCAA Tournament, Colorado State may have had a bit of a hangover playing in the NIT. They fell into a hole early with South Dakota State building a double-digit lead during the first 10 minutes of the game. The Jackrabbits were able to stay in control the rest of the way and while Colorado State threatened at times, it was not enough. The Jackrabbits instead pulled the biggest upset of the first round.
