The Ramblers and Warhawks will play the title series in the College Basketball Invitational.
The Loyola-Chicago Ramblers and UL Monroe Warhawks will play the first of a three-game series for the CBI title on Monday.
Loyola-Chicago reached the finals after beating Seattle in the semis thanks to stellar performances by guards Devon Turk and Earl Peterson, who combined for 30 points. The game was close, with the Ramblers leading by just one at halftime and trailing for a sizable part of the second half, before a late drought doomed the Redhawks. Loyola-Chicago will play the final series in its first time participating in the tournament.
Waiting for them will be UL Monroe, which beat Vermong in the semifinals. Junior forward Majok Deng had 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead his team to victory on an up-and-down game which saw both teams make runs. Tylor Ongwae pitched in another 22 for the Warhawks, which were able to seize a late lead and sustain it while withstanding the Catamounts' charges. This is also the first time UL Monroe has participated in the CBI tournament.
The key for UL Monroe will be to use its advantage in length to force misses and control the glass -- giving second chances to a good shooting team like Loyola-Chicago could prove deadly. The Ramblers will need to rely on their best weapon, their three-point shooting, to create separation and not foul against a team that got to the line 24 times in the semis.
