Fantasy football waiver wire, Week 16: Branden Oliver struggles as lead back

Ryan Mathews was out again for Week 15. Branden Oliver didn't do much in his stead. We break down the fantasy implications.

Branden Oliver got the start for the San Diego Chargers in Week 16 with Ryan Mathews sidelined due to an ankle injury. Oliver managed just 26 yards rushing on 12 carries against the Denver Broncos.

The rookie made his biggest contribution in the receiving game, catching four passes for 44 yards. Donald Brown and Ronnie Brown combined for 11 touches serving as Oliver's backups.

Fantasy impact: The Broncos rank No. 2 in the league in rush yards allowed per game, so it wasn't surprising to see Oliver struggle. After posting back-to-back 100-yard games early in the year, Oliver's play has gone downhill. He hasn't rushed for over 40 yards since Week 7.

Even if Mathews can't return to action in Week 16, Oliver should not be a high priority in any league. San Diego faces another tough run defense as they head to San Francisco. Oliver is a low-end flex play at best in deeper leagues if he starts.
