Neil Warnock sacked by Crystal Palace

The Eagles manager has paid the price for a poor first half of the season.

Neil Warnock has become the first Premier League manager to lose his job this season, having been relieved of his duties by Crystal Palace. His dismissal comes with the London side sitting 18th in the table, just inside the relegation zone, with 15 points from 18 games and without a win in six.

Warnock's second spell in charge at Selhurst Park had only begun two games into the season, after the surprise departure of Tony Pulis. Though widely regarded as a decent manager at Championship level, Warnock had never before been appointed to a top-flight position, and Palace's poor form this season marked a regression from the obdurate yet effective game instilled by his predecessor towards the end of last season.

A return for Pulis is unlikely -- though not impossible, because football -- and as such, there is no obvious candidate to take over. Tim Sherwood was heavily linked with the position before Warnock was appointed, and will presumably be amongst the early favourites. In the mean time, Keith Millen will step into the caretaker role again for this weekend's trip to fellow strugglers Queens Park Rangers.
