Find out the new plan for using Football Manager to let SB Nation Soccer build the greatest simulated football club of all time.
Last year when Football Manager 2014 was released, I attempted to start the SB Nation United project. It didn't go well. Not because the idea was flawed, but there was a lack of planning and rather ineffective execution. Fortunately, I'm the persistent type in certain situations, and the arrival of Football Manager 2015 has re-inspired me attempt the SB Nation United project yet again.
Call it version 2.0.
And this time we're all in this together. But the first thing you need to know is that this is fictional. It's not real. So please don't start yelling at me about what happens in the course of our adventure.
I've decided to start by taking over a Premier League club, rather than beginning with a lower league team and moving them up through the ranks of English football. Why? The first reason is that this will allow us to be using players recognizable to more fans, along with recognizable teams and recognizable competitions. Second, by having players and teams more people are familiar with, we can compare to the real world, and have fun either being impressed or confounded by how the simulation is carried out.
I'll chronicle our journey using the magic of screenshots, storytelling, awkward photoshops and whatever else we think might entertain. There will be screw-ups, there will be missteps, but hopefully there will be glory. Lots and lots of glory. So many pieces of silverware that we have to borrow that case Liverpool is reserving for their Premier League trophies.
So I expect the first question you'll be asking is what club will be purchased and transformed into the next giant of the football world.
The answer is Tottenham Hotspur. Right now there's likely a significant proportion of readers whose heads just exploded for any number of reasons. Yes, I'm changing the team's colors. Yes, I'm rebranding them to SB Nation United FC. No, I'm not trying to disrespect Spurs. The team is a great choice, as it features a talented player base and yet has struggled to achieve the heights that supporters believe it can.
The goal here is not to destroy the club. The goal is to make the club a titan of football. The greatest club in the history of simulated football. So in that way, we're honoring the club.
So that's the setup for what we're going to be doing this time around. Next week I'll begin to get into the nitty gritty of the process as I take over the club and move through the preseason -- details on building the roster, filling in the coaching staff and installing our tactics.
I look forward to your comments, opinions and suggestions along the way.
