Fantasy football waiver wire, Week 16: Derek Anderson wins in fill-in role

The quarterback has now beaten Tampa Bay twice this season. We break down the fantasy implications.

After their 19-17 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, the Carolina Panthers now have five wins on the season. Two of those have come with Derek Anderson at quarterback against the Buccaneers, and Anderson has performed well in both games, including Sunday, when he put up fine numbers filling in for the injured Cam Newton.

Anderson had 277 passing yards on 25-of-40 passing with a touchdown. He also ran for 14 yards on five attempts. After 18 fantasy points as a last minute fill-in in Week 1, Anderson put up 16 Sunday.

Fantasy impact: Any fantasy value Anderson might have is entirely dependent on Newton's status, as he recovers from injuries suffered in a Tuesday car accident. According to reports out of Carolina, the team is optimistic that Newton can return for Week 16, and, with the team still somehow in the running in the NFC South, there's little reason to be overly cautious with Newton.

If Anderson does continue to start in Week 16, he'll be interesting as a deep QB2 against Cleveland, with little upside beyond that. You'd have to be pretty desperate to use Anderson, but if you are, he's not the worst choice.
