Sting vs. HHH: WWE's COO prevails in wild WrestleMania classic

Everyone showed up and it was awesome.

In an absolutely ridiculous classic, Triple H defeated Sting at WrestleMania 31. But the match was less one between those two superstars and more an all-around tribute to wrestling in the 1990s. It was absurd, and perfect.

Sting was the franchise of WCW, never changing allegiances or negotiating with WWE during the Monday Night War. When WWE bought WCW, he didn't sign on with the merged company, opting to turn to independent wrestling, then TNA instead. He stuck with TNA until it was clear they weren't in a position to compete with WWE anymore, and nearly 30 years after his professional debut, he finally made his first in-ring WWE appearance.

This feud started at Survivor Series, when Sting came out to help Dolph Ziggler win the traditional elimination match, defeating the Authority and temporarily stripping them of control of the company. Triple H had repeatedly interfered in the match, and Sting, fighting for justice, came out to stop him from helping Seth Rollins get the victory. Since then, Sting has been getting in Triple H's way, stopping him from performing various dastardly deeds in the interest of fighting for what's right.

If you weren't excited by the build-up, the entrances certainly helped. Sting had a killer live band, while Triple H had a Terminator suit, held Terminator skulls, and came out to Arnold Schwarzenegger saying "It's time to play the game!"

Just before the match, it was announced that there would be no disqualifications. That would come into play later.

Sting got his shots in early and was in control for the first five minutes, but the tables quickly turned, with Triple H starting to grind him down. Sting went for a Stinger Splash outside the ring, but Triple H moved out of the way, and WCW's franchise went flying into the barricade. Trips then threw him into the stairs and spent the next five minutes beating Sting down.

Eventually, Sting recovered and put Triple H into the Scorpion Death Lock, but the Degeneration-X music hit as Billy Gunn, Road Dogg and X-Pac ran down to break it up. Sting fought them off, threw Triple H outside the ring, then hit all four with a crossbody from the top rope.

Triple H recovered and hit a pedigree, but Sting managed to kick out. Frustrated, Triple H went for his sledgehammer, but was stopped in his tracks by the nWo music. Out walked Kevin Nash, Scott Hall and Hulk Hogan -- yes, Hulk Hogan!! -- to beat up the DX members at ringside.

That let Sting set up a Scorpion Death Drop, but Triple H kicked out. Sting followed it up with a Scorpion Death Lock, struggling to keep The Game from crawling to his sledgehammer. Hulk Hogan took it away, leading to another brawl between the six around the ring. Sting put on his signature submission hold a third time, Triple H got to the ropes. He put it on a fourth time ...

AND OUT OF NOWHERE, SHAWN MICHAELS HITS STING WITH SWEET CHIN MUSIC!

Trips rolled over into a cover, and incredibly, Sting got his shoulder up to continue the match.

WWE's COO got up first and reclaimed his sledgehammer from Gunn, but Hall handed Sting his baseball bat. They circled the ring with their weapons, and Sting got the first shot in, then broke the sledgehammer in half with his second swing, to the horror of Triple H.

Sting hit the Stinger Splash and looked like he was about to win, but Triple H picked up the head end of the broken sledgehammer, hit Sting in the face, then completed the pin before nWo could interfere again.

After the match, everyone got in the ring, had a nasty staredown ... and Triple H shook hands with Sting.
