The Wildcats will lose over 40 percent of their offense with the graduation of two seniors and now losing a starting guard as a post-graduate transfer.
Villanova's Dylan Ennis, who started all 36 games for the Wildcats this season, is departing the program following graduation in May. Ennis is immediately eligible to play at another university next season.
The guard averaged 9.9. points and 3.7 rebounds and was the team's best perimeter defender this year on their way to a Big East regular season and tournament title plus a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
"Dylan has chosen to play his final season in another program," head coach Jay Wright said in a press release. "We're proud that Dylan will graduate in May with a degree in Communications and appreciate all of his efforts throughout his career here."
Ennis came to the Wildcats in 2012 after transferring from Rice. He was a part of Villanova's 29-5 season last year as well. But the reason for Ennis' transfer stems from his need to run an offense, which may be his only way into the pros following his next season. He was a part of the All-Big Eat Tournament team in March.
"Dylan is interested in finding a program that will allow him to play the role of a traditional point guard so he can be the primary ball-handler," stated Wright. "We support Dylan and thank him for all of his efforts as a student and athlete at Villanova."
And as of now, according to his father Tony McIntyre, the head of Nike's CIA Bounce AAU program in Canada, his recruitment has barely begun.
"It's wide open," McIntyre told SB Nation via text message.
Ennis' departure is likely motivated by the addition of incoming freshman point guard Jalen Brunson, a top-20 recruit who played in the McDonald's All-American Game on Wednesday.
