MLB betting: New York Yankees at Detroit Tigers preview and odds

The Detroit Tigers will try to protect their MLB-best record hosting the New York Yankees on Monday night.

The Detroit Tigers have a 5-1 record through their first six home games this season. The Tigers will try to stay dominant at home hosting the New York Yankees on Monday night at Comerica Park

Detroit is a -135 favorite to win at home on Monday -- according to sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com -- over the Yankees at +125. Alfredo Simon is the projected starter for Detroit going up against CC Sabathia for the Yankees.

Starting the season off with baseball's best record at 10-2 is successful in its own right, but what makes Detroit's start particularly impressive is the versatility in which the Tigers have found ways to win.

Through a six-game winning streak to open the season, the Tigers clobbered their opponents with offense, scoring 7.8 runs per game. However, in a three-game winning streak from April 14-17 the offense scored only five runs, while the pitching staff gave up only one. Detroit can beat teams in different ways this season.

The Yankees stumbled out of the gate to an ugly 3-6 start, but seemingly started to turn things around this past weekend with a series sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays bringing their record to 6-6 on the year.

Sabathia made only eight starts last season and was shelled for a career-worst 4.78 ERA. He is healthy this year, but is off to an 0-2 start with 5.68 ERA through two starts. Things don't get any easier Monday night against this Tigers offense.

Monday night's total is set at 8.5 runs for the Yankees vs. Tigers betting matchup. The UNDER is 6-1 over the last seven meetings between the two teams according to the OddsShark MLB Database.

This will be a tough game for the Yankees. Detroit has hit the ball well at home with six runs per game this year, and Simon has been strong through two starts with a 2-0 record and a 2.03 ERA. For the Yankees to come away with the upset, New York will likely need Sabathia to find his old form in a hurry.
