A good effort but you're not going to be able to use that anymore, Ernie.
Ernie Els found himself in the same unenviable position as so many of us weekend chops -- with his ball off wandering in the woods and up against a tree. Els, who was grinding to make the cut, set caution aside and tried to pull off an aggressive punch shot.
While most of us would limply push the ball towards the nearest spot of fairway and avoid breaking our wrist and/or club, Els tried to hit a low rocket. The follow-through, however, was way too much and his club wrapped around the trunk, snapped perfectly in half, and then rattled in the trees. He would go on to make a double bogey and finish with 13 clubs in the bag.
As we saw last week when Rory McIlroy decided to launch his 3-iron into a lake, golf clubs are disposable items for these world-class Tour pros. It costs nothing and takes minimal effort to get new ones or replace broken ones. Els, however, missed the cut so the need isn't quite so urgent for the Big Easy but he no doubt will have a new stick in his set before the weekend is over.
