Things got weird in Turkey on Friday.
OK, this one will take some explaining to unravel. On Friday in the Turkish Süper Lig, Konyaspor hosted Kasımpaşa in a midtable battle when Kasımpaşa defender Ryan Donk uncorked a wonderful shot from about 35 yards out that settled in under the crossbar to give the visitors the lead after 19 minutes.
Then a fight almost broke out.
You see, the sequence had started with Kasımpaşa winger Ryan Babel getting upended on a header and staying down on the turf, so Konyaspor switched off, appearing to be waiting for the ref to blow the play dead so physios could come on and attend to Babel. Only it turned out that Babel was playing possum, and he got up behind the Konyaspor players when they weren't looking, and Donk ran on to the ball in space while the opposition wasn't expecting it.
Konyaspor's squad was livid over the breach of fair play etiquette, and they all immediately surrounded Donk. Fortunately the referee was able to keep control of proceedings, and Kasımpaşa agreed to surrender a goal to Konyaspor as repayment for their misconduct. Hasan Kabze ran up the pitch to score his team's goal, and order was restored.
Definitely not a sequence of events you see every day, even in the regular pit of insanity that this sport can often be.
Kabze later scored a penalty to secure a 2-1 win for a fired-up Konyaspor side.
