The higher seeds mostly took care of business, meaning the games on Sunday should all go down to the wire.
The first weekend of March Madness comes to a close on Sunday, making us wait three days until college basketball resumes. Fortunately, some of the games set for Sunday are shaping up to be fantastic.
After several huge upsets on Thursday, the games on Friday were much more predictable. Two No. 3 seeds fell on the opening day, but No. 3 Oklahoma fended off No. 14 Albany for a 69-60 win. The only real surprise on Friday was No. 11 Dayton topping No. 6 Providence, and that upset sets them up for a Sunday matchup against the Sooners in which they hope to become one of the Cinderellas of this tournament.
Both of the late games are No. 4 vs. No. 5 matchups, which should also prove to be fascinating. Both No. 4 Maryland and No. 4 Louisville squeaked by in their first games by a combined five points, and they know they'll have to play better to keeping dancing into next week. Maryland's opponent, No. 5 West Virginia, also barely survived. A huge Tarik Phillip 3-pointer with 28 seconds to go led the Mountaineers to a decisive 68-62 win, but head coach Bob Huggins admitted he meant to make an offensive substitution for Phillip and just forgot.
The other two No. 1 seeds are also at play, with Duke facing No. 8 San Diego State and Wisconsin taking on No. 8 Oregon. Both had little trouble in their first-round matchups, with Frank Kaminsky putting up an easy 27 points for the Badgers while Quinn Cook nailed six three-pointers in Duke's 85-56 win over Robert Morris.
Here's the schedule for Sunday (all times p.m. and Eastern):
