The Kentucky coach was named as a member of the 2015 Basketball Hall of Fame class. He'll be joined by Dikembe Mutombo, Dick Bavetta, Spencer Haywood, Lisa Leslie and Jo Jo White.
What was once a bitter weekend for John Calipari now has a silver lining. The Kentucky coach, who saw his previously undefeated team fall to Wisconsin in the Final Four on Saturday night, has been elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Calipari is part of an 11-member group that will be inducted during a ceremony Sept. 10-12 at the Hall of Fame's Springfield, Mass., headquarters.
Joining Calipari will be Dikembe Mutombo, an eight-time NBA All-Star and four-time Defensive Player of the Year; Jo Jo White, a seven-time NBA All-Star, two-time champion and Finals MVP; Spencer Haywood, a four-time NBA All-Star, NBA champion and one-time ABA MVP; Lisa Leslie, a three-time WNBA MVP; and long-time referee Dick Bavetta.
These six will join the five individuals elected during the NBA's All-Star Weekend in February by the Hall of Fame's various committees. That group includes Louie Dampier, who was voted in by the American Basketball Association Committee; John Isaacs, who was voted in by the Early African American Pioneers Committee; Lindsay Gaze, who was voted in by the International Committee; Tom Heinsohn, who was voted in by the Veterans Committee; and George Raveling, who was voted in by the Contributor Direct Election Committee.
Former point guard and three-time NBA All-Star Kevin Johnson is the most noteworthy player who did not receive enough votes. To be elected, finalists must receive 18 of 24 votes from the Honors Committee.
