The Badgers have already beaten the Blue Devils in a postseason game once!
Monday's national championship game will be the second time Duke and Wisconsin meet on the hardwood this season and the fourth time overall, with all of those meetings coming since 2007. However, the recent basketball familiarity hasn't carried over to the football field, where the Blue Devils and Badgers have met just once, in the 1995 Hall of Fame Bowl (now the Outback Bowl).
Up until recently, Duke had a pretty putrid football history, but the 1994 season was one of the few times the Blue Devils were actually good. At 8-3 heading into the game, Duke was even ranked, at 25th in the AP Poll and 21st in the Coaches Poll.
Meanwhile, Wisconsin was in the midst of its resurgence under Barry Alvarez and fresh off a Rose Bowl appearance. The Badgers took a step back in 1994, but still entered the game at 6-4-1.
While Duke had the better record and the higher ranking, it was Wisconsin that took the early lead with a pick-six, eventually taking a 13-0 lead into the second quarter. Duke stormed back to within 13-10 at halftime and eventually tied the game at 13, but it was all Wisconsin from there, as the Badgers ran away with a 34-20 win.
Wisconsin's had a pattern of these rematches during the NCAA Tournament.
1984 Hall of Fame Bowl *finally* avenged. http://ift.tt/1NXj8Xn
