Robert Morris and Dayton both got past the First Four to play again this weekend.
The First Four concluded on Wednesday night, and we finally move on to the proper opening round of the NCAA Tournament Thursday. Two more teams joined Hampton and Ole Miss to play one more game this weekend, being among the lucky 64 who get to play in the part of the tournament people will actually watch.
Let's have a brief recap of Wednesday's First Four scores.
No. 16 Robert Morris 81, No. 16 North Florida 77
The Ospreys took a 35-29 lead into halftime and led by as much as 13 points in the second half, but Robert Morris used a 10-1 run to take a slim one-point lead. The Colonials would later pull ahead and hang on for their first-ever win in the NCAA Tournament. Lucky Jones came off the bench to lead Robert Morris with 21 points, while Rodney Pryor scored 20 points and Elijah Minnie grabbed 10 rebounds. Beau Beech led North Florida with 28 points and Jalen Nesbitt added 14. Robert Morris faces top seed Duke on Friday.
No. 11 Dayton 56, No. 11 Boise State 55
Boise State held a nine-point lead at halftime, but Dayton chipped away throughout the second half. The Flyers took a one-point lead with 37 second left thanks to a three-point shot from Jordan Sibert.
Dayton held on in the final seconds to make the second round, but it wasn't without controversy. Derrick Marks shot a three-pointer and appeared to be fouled by Kyle Davis, potentially setting up three free throws, but the referee didn't call it.
Was that a foul or not? Either way, Broncos fans will be talking about it for a long time.
Kendall Pollard led the Flyers with 17 points, while two other Dayton players scored in double digits. Dayton shot 47.6 percent from the field, while Boise State made 40 percent of its field goals. Marks led the Broncos with 23 points on 10-of-21 shooting. Dayton moves on to face No. 6 Providence Friday.
