New York can lead the Metro with a win on Wednesday.
Only three games are on tap for Wednesday in the NHL, but two of them will make for fantastic dichotomy between fan hopefulness and depression.
The headlining act is between the New York Rangers and Washington Capitals, two teams who are clearly on the rise in the Eastern Conference. Remarkably, the Rangers have thrived without starting goalie Henrik Lundqvist between the pipes, going 11-2-3 while he recovers from a throat injury. Their recent run culminated in a huge 2-1 win on Tuesday in their final visit to Nassau Coliseum on Long Island. A win on Wednesday would give them sole possession of first place in the Metropolitan Division.
Washington, meanwhile, is riding high after winning three of four games in March. Of course, a large part of that is due to Alex Ovechkin. The Capitals' captain has scored five times already this month.
If that game is an example of two teams heading in the right direction, the game preceding it on Wednesday is an excellent example of the exact opposite. The league-worst Buffalo Sabres will visit the fellow cellar dwellers Toronto Maple Leafs in the first game of the night.
