Will UConn create even more bubble drama on Selection Sunday?
Despite winning the national championship last year, the Connecticut Huskies have been an afterthought for most of 2014-15. UConn entered the American Athletic Conference tournament just 17-13, and even the most generous bracketologists had them nowhere close to the bubble.
Well, one week later and the Huskies are one win away from an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. UConn upset Cincinnati in the quarterfinals and popped Tulsa's bubble on Saturday, setting up a title match with top seed SMU. The Mustangs split the season series with UConn, with each team winning their respective home game. SMU cruised to the final round with easy wins over East Carolina and Tulsa.
Larry Brown's squad is a lock for the tournament, but they would surely like to get a win in the second-ever American tournament (the conference started play in 2013-14, rising up from the ashes of the original Big East). UConn, on the other hand, is out to destroy bubble teams' dreams and force the selection committee to rewrite their bracket at the last minute. Just another day in March college basketball.
