The Indians have reportedly agreed to terms with reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber on a five-year contract extension, per Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports and Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports.
The deal, which also includes two club option seasons, is pending a physical, and hasn't yet been announced by the Indians. The financial terms are not yet known.
Kluber was 18-9 with a 2.44 ERA in 34 starts for the Indians in 2014, with a career-high 269 strikeouts and just 51 walks in 235⅔ innings. Kluber, who turns 29 on April 10, was already signed for $601,000 in 2015, his final year before becoming eligible for salary arbitration.
The five-year deal buys out all three of Kluber's arbitration seasons plus two free agent years, with the potential for two more years in the form of two club option years. It is unknown whether Kluber's deal begins in 2015 or 2016.
Kluber is the second American League Central opening day starting pitcher to agree to a contract extension this week. The Royals inked Yordano Ventura to a five-year, $23 million contract that became official on Saturday and, like Kluber, has two club option years. Ventura has one less year of service time than Kluber.
