Isco the odd man out for Real Madrid against Atlético Madrid

James Rodriguez gets the nod in Real Madrid's midfield against local rivals Atletico Madrid over in-form Isco.

Host Atletico Madrid have gone with as strong a lineup as expected, with a setup that looks primed to cause issues on the counter while staying strong in defense. They have a very fluid attacking midfield band with Arda Turan, Koke, and Antoine Griezmann capable of pressing aggressively when out of possession and swapping roles to try and create mismatches in Real Madrid's defense. If there's anything that will let Diego Simeone's side get the upper hand on Carlo Ancelotti again, that's going to be the key.

Ancelotti's Real Madrid lineup is mostly as expected, but does have one minor surprise in it. Many thought that Isco would start in midfield given his excellent recent form, but James Rodriguez gets the nod instead. On his day, Rodriguez is certainly a more talented player, but he's only recently come off an injury and seemed a little rusty in his last appearance. Real fans will definitely be hoping that the rust has been shaken off, as getting an advantage in this first leg will be vital.

Atlético Madrid starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Jan Oblak; Juanfran, Miranda, Diego Godín, Guilherme Siqueira; Gabi, Mario Suárez; Koke, Arda Turan, Antoine Griezmann; Mario Mandzukic

Real Madrid starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Iker Casillas; Dani Carvajal, Raphael Varane, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo; Toni Kroos, Luka Modric; James Rodriguez, Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo; Karim Benzema
