April Fools! There's nothing interesting about that matchup.
It appears the NHL schedule on Wednesday will follow up a night of playoff race intrigue with an evening of teams with nothing to play for.
Each of the first three games of the night contain matchups between teams who have either already locked up a playoff spot or have been eliminated from the race entirely. That doesn't mean the games won't be entertaining, however.
Just take Toronto and Buffalo, for instance. Two of the worst teams in the NHL, the Sabres and Maple Leafs have little to play for other than hoping they sink far enough to draft Connor McDavid or Jack Eichel this summer. But Toronto has a chance to pull off something rare this season: a three-game winning streak. What better team to accomplish that against than the league's worst team?
The two NBC "Wednesday Night Rivalry" games feature interesting subplots of their own.Philadelphia and Pittsburgh always get sparks flying when they meet up, and the Avalanche and Sharks still need to wrap up playoff berths.
